Rears and Components

Mark Williams Enterprises specializes in solid ring and pinion style rear ends. There are basically three types of these rears, OE housings, fabricated housings, and Mark Williams Modular.

OE housings are a cast center section with tubes welded on in the case of a rear loading rear, or a formed sheet metal for thirdmember type rears. Mark Williams uses a 3" x .25" wall axle tube, larger than stock applications. This is intended to reduce bending during acceleration and make a generally stronger rear.

Fabricated housings have a welded center section that replaces OE housings. Many builders use this type of rear in their cars. They are generally specific to a builder, each having different center widths and 4-Link configurations. Many times this type of housing is more expensive than a MW Modular, and in the long run they are less adaptable.

A Mark Williams Modular Rear used modularized components that allow each rear to be customised to the car. We start with an aluminum center section, and bolt on to that brackes that allow for either 4-Link or solid mount style systems. These brackets dictate the center width. An end bell is attached to the brackets that allows the housing ends to be attached. The end bells control the wheel to wheel width. An alternative to aluminum brackets is to use steel end bells and tubes, allowing spring pads to be mounted to the tubes like an OE rear. Steel tube modulars are extremely versatile, they have excellent weight and performance characteristics, and as an added bonus they look superb underneath a street car.

Ordering Modular Rears

Modular rears are built starting with the center section. Standard width for an 11" or a 9" is 16 inches and a 12 Bolt is 14 inches. Then  the mouning bracket is attched to the housing, either solid mount or 4-link. Center spacing can be controlled by spacers for solid mount systems and a combination of spacers and brackets for 4-link systems. Different end bells control the wheel to wheel width. The modulars are listed with different center and wheel to wheel combinations. Pricing changes from the base price are shown with the modular rear. It is recommended that you know your center width and wheel width before you order.
